Life is a beautiful collage of priceless moments
and precious memories.
Pieced together,
they create a masterpiece to treasure…
A thought struck me today as I was driving and looking at my cellphone – which I know I must not do!!
I have a Samsung S5 mini and on the home screen, the welcome message is Life Companion.
I thought to myself – is this what life has become?? That we have a cell phone as a life companion?? Obviously this is the message that Samsung is trying to give, but I rebel against everything it stands for.
I hate that we spend more time texting when it would probably be far quicker to just make a call. But instead, we hide behind screens, phones or computers or TV’s.
And if we are not hiding, we are enthralled by watching other people live their lives through facebook or we play games where we are living our lives through the charactors in the game or we get wrapped up in sitcoms or movies which is a portrayal of how Hollywood thinks we should be living our lives.
But what about just living our own lives. In those gaps where we are alone and tempted to be bored, what about thinking about the good times past and the dreaming about the good times to come.
I recently read a book about an illness that went ‘viral’ and wiped out 90% of the world’s population. I know that sounds macabre but it was a really good read. And thought provoking. The world became simple again. No more computers, internet, phones – even land lines, electricity, air travel even vehicles came to a grinding halt when fuel ran out. A bit like when we have a power outage. We are living in a time where reality seems to be in the clouds. People make heaps of money by creating an App that enables us to send a smiley face to a friend. How does that really affect the world. Or people buy and sell shares and make fortunes that only really exist on paper. Is this real??
Nowdays, people meet behind a screen or break-up behind a screen. They have relationships behind screens. What if we forget how to be real with other people – with real people. What will the future look like? The thought terrifies me!
And in all of this, we are constantly rushing, rushing, rushing, trying to live the best life, getting caught in the rat-race, trying to make it through the day or trying to prepare for a better day.
But do we stop to breath, to laugh, to love. To enjoy today.
My prayer to the Lord went like this ….
I am here without any major agenda, pressing questions or desperate needs. I just want to feel your presence. To know that my life is pleasing in your sight. Busy, busy, busy. There just seems to be so much on the go. And yet, I try to keep it simple. Help me to know when to yes and when to say no.
The Lords response went like this ….
My dear child, you can choose to slow your life down and enjoy the simple moments. You choose your moments. You choose how to fill them. Do not fill every moment with something to do. Choose blocks of time to relax, to play, to walk and to talk. Your day need not be a terrible pressure. Make a conscious effort to slow down.
